    Editorial Policy and Fact-Checking Standards

Our goal is to publish useful, understandable, and source-led guidance for U.S. small-business owners.

This policy explains the standards Small Business Insured uses for research, writing, review, updates, and commercial independence. It applies to articles, guides, comparisons, checklists, and other editorial material.

    Source standards

We prefer primary and authoritative sources whenever they are available. Examples include state insurance departments, federal agencies, statutes and regulations, policy forms, carrier documentation, court or regulator publications, and recognized professional organizations. Secondary sources may add context, but they should not replace the best available primary evidence for a material claim.

    Fact-checking and review

    • Material factual claims should be supported by a reliable source or clearly identified as an example.
    • Illustrative prices, limits, and scenarios must not be presented as a universal quote or guarantee.
    • Policy terms are described in plain English, but readers are directed to the actual policy, endorsements, and exclusions.
    • Claims involving law, tax, cybersecurity, or regulation receive heightened scrutiny and jurisdiction-specific context.
    • Headlines and summaries should accurately reflect the article and avoid manufactured urgency.

    Dates and updates

Articles display publication or update dates. We prioritize reviews when a regulator changes a rule, an important source changes, readers flag an issue, or a topic becomes materially outdated. A changed date should reflect a meaningful review or revision, not a cosmetic refresh.

    Authorship and expertise

Bylines and author pages should identify who is responsible for the work. We do not claim professional licenses, certifications, or personal experience that cannot be substantiated. When a topic requires individualized professional judgment, we say so and encourage readers to consult an appropriately licensed insurance, legal, tax, accounting, or cybersecurity professional.

    Use of technology

Research and editorial tools, including automated tools, may help organize information, identify questions, or improve readability. Tool output is not treated as an authoritative source. Material claims must still be evaluated against reliable evidence, and no tool replaces professional advice or the controlling policy language.

    Advertising and independence

Advertising and affiliate relationships are kept separate from editorial conclusions. Compensation does not guarantee coverage, placement, or a positive conclusion. Commercial relationships are disclosed where relevant. Read our Advertising and Affiliate Disclosure.

    Corrections

We welcome evidence-based correction requests and explain our process in the Corrections Policy. Contact us through the contact page or email contact@smallbusinessinsured.com.
